On Friday afternoon, #OccupyKC decided to “mic check” former U.S. Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld soon after he took the stage at the Truman Library Auditorium. But whatever message they were trying to convey was soon drowned out by angry audience members’ boos and shouts of disapproval.
Some phrases I picked up as they were being escorted out: “You’re idiots”, “you’re the problem”, “act your age”, “you ought to be ashamed of yourselves”, “go away”, “get out of here”, go exercise (your right to free speech) somewhere else”, and “long live Donald Rumsfeld!” (to great applause).
One stubborn occupy straggler remained after the lights were dimmed again, and audience members immediately called for the lights to be put back on so she could be removed, as well. After about a minute of resistance, security escorted her out, too.
If they only knew how obnoxious and unhinged they look to the average person. Denying other peoples’ right to free speech by disrupting them is never a winning strategy. All they do is end up annoying people. They’re like cockroaches that need to be stamped out wherever they go.
The Blue Springs/Independence/Grain Valley Examiner reported:
I don’t make a lot of it,” Rumsfeld said when Kraske asked how the protests affect him.
During the 90-minute event that was free and open to the public, Rumsfeld also addressed the concerns of weapons of mass destruction during Saddam Hussein’s regime, the abuse of prisoners at Abu Ghraib by U.S. military personnel and rebuilding America’s image following the Iraq War.
